SDG has built new districts for the Bay Area, including a 64-acre waterfront destination, and significantly contributed to the revitalization of neighborhoods on the verge of transition. How we build community.
People bring communities to life. Single and multi-family homes are core to many of our developments. We meet the Bay Area’s demand for housing with smart suburban and urban developments.
Our developments are often catalysts for growth, injecting new life into neighborhoods by establishing lively commercial and cultural centers. Brooklyn Basin will be a whole new district for Oakland with a designated shopping and commercial area and we have brought numerous grocery stores, retail, and live/work developments to various Bay Area destinations.
We work with urban planners, councils, and government bodies to design distinctive parks and open spaces for the public to enjoy. Half of Brooklyn Basin’s 64 acres are designated as parks and open space with trails, lawns, and landscaped areas along the waterfront.
We improve the building blocks that make communities livable. Roads, sewer systems, and water detention centers all fall under our scope of work. We redeveloped sites including an abandoned ranch and a neglected vineyard, leaving successful communities in their place.
New developments create jobs for both for the short and long-term. Brooklyn Basin will create approximately 10,000 jobs for Oakland and many of our other developments have a positive impact on the economy by providing spaces for local businesses to flourish.
We choose the right style of development to fit with specific locations. For example, in Lafayette, we built townhomes that mirrored the rustic style of the neighborhood. In Oakland, Broadway Grand brought the first gourmet restaurants to the area–a trend that led the way for the restaurant boom in the area.
Many of the commercial tenants at the Hive are local entrepreneurs and businesses. With 104 apartments being built over the next several years, the Hive will lay the groundwork for a thriving live/work community in a modern context.MORE ON THE HIVE

Key concepts we use to develop strong communities include building for the local market, creating common and open-spaces for residents and tenants to share in, and developing innovative mixed-use buildings that place select amenities near people.
Over the past 20 years, we’ve helped to establish dozens of bustling communities in the Bay Area. Currently, we’re building a community in Oakland anchored by social entrepreneurship, co-working spaces, local business, and multi-family housing, just one of the many examples of our ongoing commitment to community building.
