Overview

Downtown Novato was in need of new housing and a natural foods market. We worked with the local community to bring Millworks, a mixed-use development anchored by a 40,000-square-foot Whole Foods Market, to the City of Novato. The new development transformed an underused area (formerly a mill) into a retail and residential community with 125 apartments and a central shopping area.

Land Restoration

Remediating fuel.

During renovations, SDG discovered an underground fuel tank. To thoroughly mitigate the risk, we tested the ground and water and remediated the contamination.

Solutions

SDG worked closely with community groups, Whole Foods, and the City of Novato to develop Millworks. The City wanted more people to move downtown and Whole Foods felt like a great avenue to attract new residents. Whole Foods was too small to be a stand-alone site, so we developed a mixed-use plan with the help of community input. We successfully navigated a highly involved design review process to account for a wide range of unique community needs.

Community Builder

Activating downtown Novato.

Millworks received vigorous support from community groups. A group of local parents called the “Coalition of Healthy Foods” formed to rally in favor of the development. Together with these voices, we built commercial and residential spaces to activate an underused area of downtown Novato.

Impact

Millworks successfully revitalized an underused area of downtown Novato. Apartments brought residents to the area and Whole Foods created the foundations for a sustainable community. That area of the City enjoyed new foot traffic from residents, and added to downtown Novato’s viability as a residential and commercial district.
