Overview

Formerly an industrial district, Jack London Square (JLS) has been in a constant state of evolution over the past decade. At the time SDG discovered the vacant land that now houses 288 Third, a 91-unit condominium development, JLS was lacking a robust residential community. Working extensively with community partners, neighborhood associations, and government agencies, our goal was to build a development that would benefit everyone involved and help revitalize JLS through environmentally conscious design.

Transformations

A new Jack London Square.

SDG purchased 288 Third as a vacant, fenced-in lot and transformed it into a desirable condominium building with 91 for-sale units. The resulting influx of residents contributed to overall neighborhood viability, and brought much-needed foot traffic to the shopping district.

Solutions

SDG collaborated with community partners to commemorate Jack London Square’s historic warehouse district, weaving preservation with new development to create community. Along with the Jack London District Association (JLDA), we implemented a district-wide, informational series about historical sites. SDG restored the markers throughout the neighborhood and added information about those sites of interest. Additionally, SDG funded a walking tour brochure to accompany the markers. The result was a brilliant commemoration of JLS’ history and a fresh, modern residential building ushering new life into the area.

Along with the Jack London District Association (JLDA), we implemented a district-wide, informational series about historical sites.

Impact

Now 100% sold and boasting an active homeowner’s association (HOA), 288 Third contributed to changing JLS into a lively residential, commercial, and shopping district on Oakland’s waterfront. Further, SDG restored a walking tour route of the historic warehouse district and funded an accompanying brochure–knitting together old and new for a robust community experience.
